Our Verdict

A bench scraper is the most underrated tool for Filipino breads, and this one does the job well. The measured edge makes dividing dough fast and even, the blade handles soft brioche-style doughs without tearing them, and the bonus scoop earns its keep. If you bake ensaymada or pandesal even a few times a year, it's worth having.

What We Liked

  • The stainless steel blade has etched measurements in inches and centimeters, so you can portion ensaymada, pandesal, or ube bun dough into even pieces without reaching for a ruler
  • Cuts cleanly through soft, buttery enriched doughs and lifts them off the counter in one piece, which is exactly where sticky ube doughs tend to tear
  • The included plastic scoop is safe on nonstick pans and heat resistant to 230°F, handy for transferring chopped ingredients or scooping halaya out of a pot
  • Dishwasher safe, and the scraper nests inside the scoop so the set stores in one slot of a drawer

Drawbacks

  • At around $18 for the set, it costs more than a basic single scraper; if you only want the blade, simpler stainless scrapers sell for $8-$11
  • The plastic scoop is useful but not essential, and it's only heat resistant to 230°F, so keep it out of hot oil
