Our Verdict
A dependable, budget-friendly shortcut to classic ube puto. It won't taste like fresh ube the way a real-yam dessert does, but for a big, colorful batch of soft steamed cakes for a merienda or party, it's quick, cheap, and hard to mess up. Top each one with a sliver of cheese for the traditional puto look.
What We Liked
- The easiest way to make ube puto, the soft, fluffy Filipino steamed rice cakes, at home. You only add water and melted butter, then steam for 15-20 minutes
- One 500 g pack makes a big batch, enough for a party tray of mini puto or a couple dozen muffin-sized cakes
- Skimmed milk powder is already in the mix, which gives the cakes a soft, slightly milky crumb without needing fresh milk or eggs
- A Philippine brand that's easy to find at Filipino grocers and on Weee!, where it's in stock for under $9
Drawbacks
- The purple comes from artificial colors (E129 and E133) and the ube taste from added flavoring, not real ube, so skip it if you avoid synthetic dyes
- Wheat flour is the base, so it isn't gluten-free, and you'll need a steamer and small molds, which not every kitchen has
