Our Verdict
If you make ube halaya from fresh or frozen grated ube, or bake with mashed purple sweet potato, a ricer is the easiest upgrade for a silky, fiber-free texture, and OXO's adjustable model is the most comfortable and versatile one we've used. People who only ever bake with store-bought jam or powder can skip it.
What We Liked
- Pressing boiled ube or purple sweet potato through the fine setting gives a perfectly smooth, lump-free purée in seconds, which is the base of any good homemade ube halaya
- The three textures (fine, medium, coarse) are built into the chute, so you switch with a twist instead of hunting for separate interchangeable disks
- The grooved pot rest hooks securely over a bowl or saucepan, so you only have to squeeze instead of balancing the tool
- Soft, non-slip handles stay comfortable through a couple of pounds of dense, starchy yam, and it's dishwasher safe
Drawbacks
- Some owners report the adjustable twist mechanism wearing out or loosening over time, which a simpler fixed-disk ricer doesn't risk
- The hopper is modest, so a large batch of halaya means refilling it several times
Key Features
- Built-in adjustable disk: fine, medium, and coarse settings
- Grooved pot rest for hands-free positioning over bowls
- Soft, non-slip Good Grips handles
