Our Verdict
If you bake with ube regularly, this is the jar to buy. Maynila's big-batch halaya isn't a boutique product, but it spreads well, bakes well, and costs far less per ounce than 12 oz jars, especially on sale. For the occasional halo-halo, a smaller jar makes more sense.
What We Liked
- The 32 oz jar holds nearly three times as much as the usual 12 oz halaya, so one jar covers a full batch of ensaymada, an ube cake, and halo-halo for the week
- Often on sale at Filipino online grocers (we've seen it at $12.95, down from $19.95), which works out to one of the lowest per-ounce prices for halaya we've found
- Made by Fitrite, a Filipino-owned company that has been exporting Philippine foods to Filipinos abroad since 1982
- A spreadable, bakery-friendly texture that fills ube cheese pandesal and ensaymada without needing to be cooked down first
Drawbacks
- A 32 oz jar is a lot of halaya; if you only bake occasionally, plan to freeze some in small portions once it's open
- The retailer listing doesn't include a full ingredient list, so check the label if you avoid added colors or preservatives
